Late Night Confessions

Jacob

Despite my best efforts, Delilah’s suspension stood at three days. Elaine Harding’s nose would never look the same, but I didn’t have much sympathy for her. The things she said were mean, but the comment about Delilah’s father was hitting below the belt, even for her. I wanted to defend Delilah, to go to Elaine and give her a piece of my mind, but I knew it would only cause more trouble in the long run.

I gave Delilah time to cool off, but I really wanted to talk to her and make sure she knew I was there for her—as a friend, of course. After school on the second day of her suspension, I called her cell a few times. When she didn’t answer by later that night, I tried the home phone.

“Hello?” Mrs. Stavros answered.

“Oh, hi, Mrs. Stavros. I was calling for Delilah, is she available?” I asked, hoping she was home and willing to talk to me. The alternative was her ignoring my calls on purpose.

“Uh, no, I’m sorry, Jacob. She’s been gone all day. I’m not sure where she is,” she said, a distracted tone in her voice.

“You don’t know where she is?” I asked, concerned that Delilah may have gone off half-cocked and gotten herself into more trouble.

“No, she left early this morning and hasn’t returned my calls. I’m sure she’ll be home later. If you’d like, I can let her know you called,” she said, still distracted.

“You’re not worried? It’s almost ten,” I said, noting the hour and temperature. It was cold, unusually cold for a Georgia November night.

“Oh, is it? I hadn’t noticed. I’ve been studying for my board exams,” she said, and she didn’t seem to care that her daughter was out in the cold, at night, who knew where. I shouldn’t have gotten so angry, but I did, and I said what I said. No taking it back once it was out.

“Do you not care? What if she’s dead in a ditch somewhere and you’re just sitting at home ignoring her?” My parents would kill me if they knew I was so rude, but Delilah deserved better than what she’d been getting from her mother. Anyone did.

Her silence was either an indication that she was ignoring me, or she was speechless. It was the latter, but when she found her voice, I realized I may have blown any chance I had at ever being with Delilah by thoroughly ticking off her mother.

“Excuse me? Who do you think you are giving out parenting advice?”

“Um, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean… wait, no, I did mean it. Don’t you see how amazing your daughter is? She’s sweet and helpful, and all the best things you could ever ask for in another human being, and the only thing she wants in the world is for her mother to love her.” I was digging the hole deep, but since it was already inescapable, I decided I might as well dig out the other side.

“I do love my daughter, Jacob.
